96th Oscars 2024 Shortlists Announced for 10 Categories: The Rise of ‘Beau Is Afraid’ and Other Underdogs

96th Oscars 2024 Shortlists Announced for 10 Categories

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently revealed the shortlists for the 96th Oscars in 10 different categories.

Top Mentions for “Barbie”

Greta Gerwig’s meta-comedy, “Barbie,” stands out with five mentions, including sound, original song with submissions from Billie Eilish (“What I Was Made For?”), Dua Lipa (“Dance the Night”), and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt (“I’m Just Ken”). It also secured a spot for original score. However, it missed out on a nod for makeup and hairstyling, a category that brought some unexpected surprises.

Surprises and Snubs

Alongside “Barbie,” both “The Color Purple” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” didn’t make the cut. Instead, A24’s unique “Beau is Afraid” and Universal Pictures’ summer horror film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” found a place on the shortlist.

Musical Talents in the Running

The music categories feature compositions from Daniel Pemberton (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”), Ludwig Göransson (“Oppenheimer”), and the late Robbie Robertson (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Notable among the composers are Black talents Jon Batiste (“American Symphony”) and Kris Bowers (“The Color Purple”), legendary musician Laura Karpman (“American Fiction”), and nonbinary Oscar nominee Mica Levi (“The Zone of Interest”).

Original Songs in the Spotlight

Original song nominations include two tracks each from Warner Bros’ “The Color Purple” (“Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower,” sung by Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino) and Apple Original Films’ “Flora and Son” (“High Life” and “Meet in the Middle”). Olivia Rodrigo’s hit “Can’t Catch Me Now” from “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” is also in the running, alongside Lenny Kravitz (“Road to Freedom” from “Rustin”) and Wes Anderson, who co-wrote “Dear Alien” from “Asteroid City.”

Shorts Making Waves

Wes Anderson’s short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” and Pedro Almodovar’s “Strange Way of Life,” featuring Pedro Pascal, made it to the live-action shortlist.

Visual Effects Selections

The Visual Effects Branch faces the task of choosing five nominees from the remaining 10 films. Standouts include Toho’s monster flick “Godzilla: Minus One,” Zack Snyder’s epic “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire,” and the animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

Standout Movies

Some notable films in the Oscar race are Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” earning four mentions, including an original song nod. J.A. Bayona’s “Society of the Snow” is also gaining attention, possibly following the surprise success path of last year’s “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which won four Oscars.

96th Oscars 2024 Shortlists Announced in Documentary Features

In the documentary feature category, leading contenders securing spots include Apple Original Films’ “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” Netflix’s “American Symphony,” and MTV Documentary Films’ “The Eternal Memory.” Notably absent from the list is National Geographic’s “The Mission,” while “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” made it through. Additionally, Magnolia’s “Kokomo City” and “Little Richard: I Am Everything” didn’t make the cut, and Janus and Sideshow’s “Anselm” from Wim Wenders failed to garner enough votes.

96th Oscars 2024 Shortlists Announced in International Features

The international feature race didn’t have many surprising exclusions, except for Romania’s “Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World” and Chile’s “The Settlers” not making the list. The familiar names include the U.K.’s “The Zone of Interest” and Spain’s “Society of the Snow.”
