Gareth Edwards makes an outstanding second feature debut with this assured and charismatic Godzilla remake from 1998 director Roland Emmerich’s disaster flick – treating its lead monster like an active nuclear weapon.
Beginning with an accident at a nuclear power plant, security specialist Ford (Kick-Ass’ Aaron Taylor-Johnson) becomes aware of an attack by an alien creature known as MUTO on board a train carrying missiles to San Francisco. Ford and his partner manage to avoid being devoured by it but become victims in its subsequent blackout.
Monarch is revealed as being responsible for tracking these creatures, and Ford joins their investigation; however, soon thereafter his EOD training leads to him being disapproved by government and assigned instead to protect a busload of civilians with Elle (Elizabeth Olsen), another soldier with her family including Sam who forms part of this mission. She gives an impressive performance even if her backstory seems lackluster and predictable; Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston also give excellent performances.

There are exciting set pieces galore throughout this movie – Tony Stark facing off against Hulk inside his massive Veronica suit to action aboard a runaway train in Seoul – while all this action-packed excitement happens.
One of the film’s more striking sequences is an atmospheric slow-motion battle sequence between the Avengers and Ultron’s android minions in a cathedral, similar to how Bishop gang faced off Mapache’s army in The Wild Bunch. Though Ultron is more uninspiring as an antagonist than Loki or Ian McKellan’s Magneto, James Spader’s arch performance still offers hope for entertainment, although sometimes veers off into camp territory.
The film also has plenty of heart, with excellent banter between its main heroes – including Quicksilver played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Scarlet Witch played by Olsen – providing plenty of entertainment value despite feeling somewhat overlong at times. It may require prior knowledge to fully enjoy this one though; yet still enjoyable nonetheless.
