Luis Vasquez, the main force behind the post-punk/darkwave project called the Soft Moon, passed away in Los Angeles on Friday at the age of 44. The L.A. County coroner shared this sad news.

The Soft Moon’s official social media accounts confirmed Luis’s death in a post, but they didn’t mention the cause.

Luis’s passing is connected to two other deaths at a private residence in Los Angeles. The coroner identified these individuals as 46-year-old John “Juan” Mendez, a well-known techno DJ in Los Angeles who also recorded as Silent Servant (his management confirmed his death), and 43-year-old Simone Ling, who was reportedly Juan’s partner. The coroner didn’t say why any of them passed away.

A message on the Soft Moon’s Facebook page said, “We’re really sad to share that our friend, Luis Vasquez, is no longer with us. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and everyone in the music community. Please give them privacy during this tough time. It’s a big loss, and we’re devastated.”

Luis initially started the Soft Moon as a project to record music at home. Over time, it became a popular post-punk/darkwave project. The music, meant just for Luis and a few friends, gained a worldwide fan base with its mesmerizing sounds.

The Soft Moon toured with famous acts like Depeche Mode, Interpol, and Mogwai and released five albums.

Last year, they performed at the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena.
