Wonka 2023 Review: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Remember that awesome part in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” where Gene Wilder takes everyone on a wild ride through the Chocolate Factory, chanting and getting more and more excited? Well, in the new movie “Wonka,” things are a bit different.

Wonka 2023 Review: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

In this fun, energetic, and perfectly staged prequel to the famous Roald Dahl story, Timothée Chalamet plays Willy Wonka as a young man full of goodness and dreams. He’s on a mission to share the magic of his candy with the whole world.

For Willy, chocolate is not just a tasty treat; it’s like a religion that can change your day, mood, and even your life. Timothée Chalamet brings Willy to life with his infectious and delightful performance. As a 25-year-old chocolate enthusiast, Willy arrives in London with dreams of opening his first chocolate shop and sharing his unique treats with everyone.

Willy faces challenges in London, where he plans to set up his chocolate shop. The city’s three top chocolatiers, Slugworth, Fickelgruber, and Prodnose, are not happy about the competition. They scheme to shut Willy down with the help of the Chief of Police, who’s a chocoholic doing their bidding for sweet payoffs.

To make matters worse, Willy ends up in a rooming house run by the mean Mrs. Scrubbit, who traps her patrons with a lifetime contract, turning them into enslaved workers. But Willy, being clever, finds a way to slip in and out of captivity, organizing a team of allies to help him stand up against the forces of old-school movie badness.

Wonka 2023 Review: Challenges and Villains

The villains in this story, like Slugworth and Mrs. Scrubbit, are classic bad guys, snarling and scheming. Willy, along with his team of allies, faces obstacles, including a thief who becomes his wild card—an Oompa-Loompa played by Hugh Grant with a unique flair.

The movie is enjoyable with its Victorian-era look, and it’s expected to be a hit during the holidays. However, some feel it could have been even better if it embraced more of Roald Dahl’s spirit and was a bit less polished for children. The songs in the movie are catchy, and the reprised iconic song “Pure Imagination” tickles our sweet tooth of nostalgia.

In the end, “Wonka” is a feel-good movie that might not make you levitate, but it will surely leave you with a smile.
